Ilorin — The Kwara State police command, yesterday in Ilorin,
paraded six highway robbery suspects said to have been terrorising the
state capital and its environs .
The state Commissioner of Police, Chinwike Asadu paraded the suspects at a press conference in the police headquarters.
Three of the suspects said to be highway robbers were also alleged to
have specialised in stealing commercial motorcycles using grounded
pepper and other corrosive substances .
Asadu also said arms and ammunition including two AK47 rifles with Nos.
KP342247 and 22618, two automatic pump action guns with serial numbers
21-78INE and DT5B10; 37 live cartridges, 35- 7.62mm ammunition for AK/47
riffles and two AK/47 magazines, were recovered from the suspects.
According to him,”three of the robbery suspects specialized in
motorcycle theft. They steal motorcycles in KwaraState and sell them in
towns in neighbouring states.
“The hoodlums always pretend to be innocent passengers trying to hire
motorcycles but they end up putting pepper or other corrosive
substances into the eyes of the riders before snatching them from the
owners.”
Asadu further said that his men intercepted a green colour Golf car
with number plate Abuja BB 665 BWR with four male occupants, driving
against the traffic from Ilorin towards Ogbomoso highway in a suspicious
manner last Monday at about 1 a.m.
According to him, “the patrol team managed to force the car to a halt
for search after initial resistance from the driver who sped off on
sighting the police.
“However, on sensing danger, the four occupants immediately abandoned
the car and took to their heels. They were also pursued by the
policemen and consequently one of them was arrested while three others
escaped into a nearby bush.”
He said the suspect was later identified as Abdulahi Umaru, adding that the items were recovered when the vehicle was searched.
”One of the recovered pump action guns loaded with six rounds of live
cartridges was found in the passenger’s front seat in the car while the
two loaded AK47 rifles and one pump action were found inside a bag
neatly concealed under the back seat of the car,” he added.
