Reps move to probe killing of 4 Nasarawa Varsity students by soldiers

ABUJA-MEMBERS of the House of Representatives Tuesday mandated the committees on Internal Security and Police Affairs to investigate the killing of four University of Nasarawa students  by soldiers.
The House also killed a motion on the need to further investigate judges Charle  Archibong and Thomas  Naron  for alleged   legal misconduct.
This was sequel to a motion brought to the floor of the House by  Hon Kingsley Chinda, PDP, Rivers state under matters of national importance.
Chinda who led the debate had argued that “the recent killing of some Nasarawa University students by soldiers   on February 25 who embarked on a peaceful protest for lack of water and electricity was very uncivil.
He said, “the deployment of soldiers or policemen armed with live ammunition to university campuses in the guise of quelling students protests is clearly wrong and unacceptable. ”
“The present case is one too many in cases of extra-judicial killings by men of the police and the armed forces that daily take place in university campuses and several parts of the country against defenceless innocent  students and citizens is very condemnable. ”
Chinda explained further that”the incident has led to very serious tension within the university community and its environ as so many were reported to have deserted thier homes for fear of further attacks by man of t’he Nigerian Army and/or reprisal attack by the students. ”
”The situation is already generating ill feelings and bad blood between the university students and men of the Nigerian Army and if not immediately checked could lead to further escalation of violence in the area and the area could be completely cut off from other parts of Nasarawa. ”
Hon Aminu Tambuwal who presided at this juncture called for a vote voice and it was unanimously adopted.
Both committees on Security and Police Affairs are expected to submit their reports within two weeks to the House. .
But a similar attempt by Hon Kingsley Chinda to also sponsor a motion on the need to further investigate Judges Naron and Achibong met a brickwall as members of the House unanimously killed it.
Chinda had argued that “both judges should be made to face other law enforcement agencies and get stiffer penalties. ”
Most members however thought otherwise and when Tambuwal did put it to a voice vote the nays overwhelmed the House.

Early morning fire wreaks havoc in RSUST

PORT HARCOURT – TEEMING on-campus female students of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Port Harcourt are now displaced following a dawn fire which razed one of the female hostels at the institution.
The wild fire took out the entire Hostel A2 bungalow, displacing all of three official occupants and several squatters in over 30 rooms with most victims losing all belongings as the raging fire also forced out occupants of adjacent Hostel A1.
Wosa Chidiebere Prisca, a Foundation Education student among those displaced told Vanguard that. “A lot of us left early for 6.00am lectures this morning only to be told moments later that our hostel was on fire. It was too late before those in my situation got back.”
Good Isiah, a 100 Level Computer Studies orphan student of Ogoni descent who lost all her property was inconsolable over the burning of her vital documents wondering who would come to her rescue to retrieve the valued papers.
In preliminary appraisal of the incident, South South Zonal Team Leader, Search and Rescue Unit of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Fortunatus Anyanwu told Vanguard that the fire was set off when a camp cooking gas exploded on an occupant in an undisclosed room while lighting up the cooking appliance.
The NEMA official however explained that no casualty was recorded in the incident, but there were indications that the students who lit the gas cooker may have sustained some injuries.
Other affected students who spoke in anonymity stressed that the gas cooker exploded in Room 28 of the affected block and spread fast to raze the entire building, blaming the school management for not monitoring its prohibition of use of cooking gas on campus, while others bemoaned the school’s unpreparedness to respond with dispatch to have possibly saved the situation.
However, Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Desmond Nwosu who described the incident as unfortunate put the number of those displaced at “About 100 and we are happy no life was lost and management is making necessary arrangement to reach out to those affected”

NNPC to support Kanu Heart Foundation

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has pledged to support the Kanu Heart Foundation (KHF) in its quest to build a befitting hospital for heart surgery in the country.
The Group Managing Director of the Corporation, Mr. Andrew Yakubu, made the pledge when he received the founder of KHF and former Super Eagles player, Nwankwo Kanu in his office at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, last week.
“As an entity, we believe in Corporate Social Responsibility. We participate in things geared towards giving back to the society. Therefore, we will support you on this laudable project and also urge other stakeholders within our areas of operation to do so,” Engineer Yakubu stated.
The NNPB boss also lauded the former soccer star for his achievements in the field of play and in particular, for his decision to give back to God for the miracle done in his life and glistering career. “I pray God keeps you long enough to fulfill your dream,” he added.
By way of support, he said a strong team of medical staff from the Corporation will be deployed to collaborate with the KHF in order to determine areas where the NNPC can be of assistance, adding that the NNPC would honour the invitation to the launch of the new KHF Hospital in Abuja, scheduled to hold on 14th March, 2013.
Earlier, Nwankwo Kanu told the GMD that the Foundation, which had so far conducted 452 successful heart operations, was planning to build a hospital in Nigeria so as to be able to do the operations in-country.
He however said that over the years, the KHF have been having funding challenges, calling on the NNPC to, on behalf of the less-privileged kids, support this initiative of giving hope to Nigerian kids.
“As you know, we are currently the champions of Africa in football. It will surely be nice if we also become the champions of Africa in the health sector. We’ll like NNPC to reach out to other stakeholders in the oil and gas industry to support us.
“Currently, we have about 150 operations cases that are pending now. We believe when this hospital is built in Abuja, Nigerians with heart defects would be able to easily find some medical solace here without going through the stress of going abroad for medication,” Kanu said.
The KHF, which was founded in 2000 is a charity organization established to help under-privileged African children and young adults who are living with different heart ailments in Nigeria and other African countries respectively to get cardiac surgical operations needed.

If you want us to release French citizens, release our women, Boko Haram tells Jonathan

LAGOS (AFP) – A video appeared on YouTube Monday of seven kidnapped members of a French family with their abductors, who claimed to be from Islamist extremist group Boko Haram and demanded the release of prisoners.
The kidnappers, claiming to be from the Nigerian group Boko Haram, say they carried out the abduction in part due to France’s “war against Islam,” apparently a reference to French military action in Mali.
The more than three-minute video shows the family, including four children, held in an undisclosed location, surrounded by at least three of the abductors whose faces are hidden. It was not clear when the video was made.
“If you want us to release these French citizens, quickly release all our women you are detaining,” one of the abductors says in Arabic, addressing Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
He calls on Cameroon to release “our brothers”.
At the start of the video, the father of the family reads a statement from a piece of paper, his four children in front of him, his wife and brother beside him.
Two of the abductors hold weapons and ammunition, while a banner with two rifles hangs behind them.
The family, with children aged 5 to 12, were kidnapped in the West African nation while visiting a national park.
Cameroon authorities said the family was taken over the border into Nigeria’s restive northeast.
Despite claims in the video, it was not immediately clear if the abductors were indeed from Boko Haram, which has carried out a violent insurgency for years in northern and central Nigeria but has never before claimed a kidnapping.
Most previous Boko Haram videos have featured suspected leader Abubakar Shekau speaking in the Hausa language common throughout Nigeria’s north.
A splinter faction of the group known as Ansaru, which has risen in prominence in recent weeks, appears to have focused specifically on taking foreign hostages.
Ansaru claimed the December kidnapping of a French national in northern Nigeria and the recent abduction of seven foreigners from a construction site in Bauchi state.
In statements, Ansaru has protested about France’s efforts against Islamist rebels in Mali among other issues.
Analysts have said a criminal group may be behind the abduction of the family with the intent of selling the hostages or collecting ransom.
France’s government has previously blamed Boko Haram and maintained that position on Monday.
“A video of the French family kidnapped last Tuesday in northern Cameroon has been released by Boko Haram,” Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement.
“For all of us, these images are terribly shocking. They display a cruelty without bounds. We are proceeding with the checks required in these circumstances. All state resources are mobilised to free our compatriots.”
On Thursday, French President Francois Hollande said that the family was probably being held in two groups. While all seven were together in the video, it was not clear how recent the footage was.
The family, who were based in Cameroon, were visiting the Waza National Park when they were kidnapped. They have been identified as Tanguy Moulin-Fournier and his wife Albane, as well as their four sons, Eloi, Andeol, Mael and Clarence.
Tanguy’s brother Cyril Moulin-Fournier was on vacation and with them at the time. The three adults are all around 40 years old.
The family, with the exception of the uncle, moved to Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, in autumn 2011 when the father began a job there overseeing the construction of a liquid natural gas plant. The uncle lives in Barcelona, Spain.
Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation and largest oil producer, roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.
Boko Haram has called for the creation of an Islamic state in the country, where corruption is deeply rooted and most of the population lives on less than $2 per day despite its oil reserves.

Lagos camps LASTMA, KAI for intensive community training

The Lagos State government, weekend, said the ongoing reform exercise in the traffic management sector was aimed at improving traffic operatives’ sense of community services and achieve law enforcement with human face.
Senior Special Assistant on Transport Education, Dr. Mariam Masha, made the remarks at the Agbowa relief camp, where about 200,Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA and Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI, personnel are currently undergoing career evaluation programme including community services.

Masha said the on-going reform: “Is to enhance capacity of the traffic and environmental operatives with the central goal of making a life-time change in the state law enforcement as well as their agencies.”
She said the ideals of selfless service, humility, enterprise, interaction, trust, inter-agency relationships and other sound values “are being inculcated in these participants towards improved service delivery to the people of the state.
According to her, “we know what we want as a government and we want the right people in the right places. The officers were grouped and assigned specific areas with various traffic and environmental challenges that need to be addressed.
“They developed plans to address these and work with the community to effect positive change and promote law and order. She added that this project will form a significant part of their assessment.”

Boko Haram video shows ‘cruelty’ of kidnappers – France

PARI(AFP) – France said Monday that a video of a kidnapped French family with their abductors, who claimed to be from Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, was a “shocking” display of the kidnappers’ cruelty.
“A video of the French family kidnapped last Tuesday in northern Cameroon has been released by Boko Haram,” Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement.
“For all of us, these images are terribly shocking. They display a cruelty without bounds,” Fabius said. “We are proceeding with the checks required in these circumstances. All state resources are mobilised to free our compatriots.”
The seven family members were abducted last week in northern Cameroon.
The more than three-minute video shows the family, including four children, held in an undisclosed location and surrounded by at least three of the abductors from the Nigerian group whose faces are hidden.
A source close to the family confirmed their identities to AFP. It was not clear when the video was made.
French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, speaking after a top-level meeting that followed the video’s release, confirmed the government had seen the clip.
France “now has the information that Boko Haram claims to be holding” the seven French citizens, Ayrault said, adding that the family is “probably held in Nigeria”.
“The video tape… is being studied by our (intelligence) services, who are examining precisely the nature of these claims,” he said. “French authorities are in close and permanent contact with Nigerian and Cameroonian authorities.”

Demolition: Ijora slum evictees count losses

…Say we now sleep under the bridge
Residents of Iganmu Alawo Community in Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area, LCDA, obviously did not see it coming. So it came as a rude shock to them when they woke up last weekend to be confronted by bulldozers of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit. And by the time the operation, which was reminiscent of the Oshodi demolition exercise, was over, the slum settlement which had been home for the residents for years had been reduced to rubbles and they found themselves homeless.
The demolition is said to have been carried out to pave way for the actualisation of the Ijora housing scheme estimated to have about 10008 housing units. Governor Babatunde Fashola had in his budget presentation for the year 2013, informed of ongoing construction of houses of 1, 2, and 3 bedroom flats in at least 15 locations such as Ilupeju, Mushin, Alimosho, Sangotedo, Agbowa, Ogba, Igando, Magodo, Omole, Surulere, Lekki, Abijo, among others, adding that plans were on for more in Ikorodu, Badagry, Ijanikin, Ketu, Ijora Badia and Bariga.
Since the demolition, thousands of displaced residents have taken refuge under the Orile Bridge, while others presently sleep beside their belongings at every available open space.
Evictees recount experiences Mr. Ifianyi Oyema, a resident of the community, said: “I slept under the bridge. But while we slept, some of our possessions were carted away during the night. All I could do was to salvage what was left of my belongings.”
Oyema, a former commercial motorcycle operator popularly called Okada lamented that he relocated to the community two months ago due to the new road traffic law which banned Okada operation from major roads in the state. He pleaded: “I want the state government to assist me with N4, 000 to transport myself back to the village. I am tired of living in Lagos.”

Another resident, Mrs. Olayinka Ogunyemi, who also passed the night outside, at the mercy of the elements, urged the state government to relocate the residents to another place.
“All we need from the state government is for it to relocate us to a better place since the Federal Government has taken over our land and have used it for the construction. So we will want the state government relocate us immediately. We are dying,” Ogunyemi said.
Ganiyu Rufai, also a resident, who hitherto lived in a church located within the community narrated thus: “My family and my church members have been rendered homeless by the eviction. Prior to the demolition, we appealed to them to give us some consideration but they refused. We are very useful to the government. I can say that is why we had been spared over the years, despite all the rumourss of the likely demolition of this place. We are very surprised that government demolished our houses. We have no power but we are appealing to them to considerate by providing us shelter”.
Assault on community leaders
However, during the demolition exercise, irate residents went after their community leader, Baale, Owosheni Medunoye, alleging that “he sabotaged our effort to continuously occupy the community”.
Angered by the development, the residents attacked the Baale at about 9:00 am, demanding that he should explain why he signed the eviction letter from the government without informing residents of the state government’s intention.
One of the residents who identified himself as Oladeinde said: “We don’t know why he signed the letter without informing the residents of the development. It shows that the state government has offered him substantial amount of money before embarking on the demolition exercise”, adding that “since his installation two months ago by Chief Ojora, he has done the community no good.”
We are shocked, says Baale
Speaking with newsmen, the Baale of Iganmu Alawo Community, Chief Lucas Owosheni Medunoye, expressed shock, saying: “We were formerly living in Ilaje_Iganmu where the National Art Theatre is presently located. But the Federal Government moved us to this place to enable them build the National Art Theatre in 1973. I cannot say specifically the number of people still alive; we are more than 10,000.The state government gave us the quit notice on February 20”.
Medunoye, however, denied sabotaging the effort of the community, saying that the letter of eviction was handed over to him by officials of the state government who demanded that he should hand over the letter to Chief Ojora, his superior, for proper action. After few minutes of heated argument, the protesters trooped to the office of the Chief for confirmation.
We are builders and not demolishers
Recently, Governor Fashola undertook an extensive tour of projects across the state and disclosed that his administration was to launch a capital intensive housing estate of about 1008 flats at Ijora for the teeming populace, adding that the first phase of the state’s light rail project, from Iganmu to Marina in Central Lagos, would be completed in June this year.
“People should be able to live close to the train station and walk about a kilometre to their homes. So it is a dream, it is beginning to come together. This is what we saw and we will deliver it. What we are going to do in Ijora from this year with about 1008 housing units is not consistent with a government that is demolishing. We are builders and not demolishers. We are focused; we know where the target is. We are locked on target and that is why we are all out here as a team from our local governments to House of Assembly, members of the House of Representatives. This government is tight, it knows where its goal is and it knows what its people expect of it and would deliver it,” Fashola stated.
Demolition exercise
The newly promoted Chief Superintendent of Police and Chairman of the Taskforce, Bayo Sulaimon, who led the operation, said the state government could no longer allow continuous existence of slum in the area, saying there was no way government can allow slum in the heart of the state, considering its megacity aspiration.
According to him: “There is no way we can achieve the mega city status with this kind slum in this area. You can see it is a swampy area. The Nigerian Breweries is very close and there are some other industries around here and to allow a slum to remain here is not acceptable.

Justus Esiri: Sudden departure of a Nollywood patriarch

 A TRIBUTE
WE hadn’t seen for years. But news of Mr Justus Esiri recuperating in a London hospital troubled me to no end. For, we had a relationship – Justus Esiri, Gaby Okoye (Gabosky), Charles Igwe, Amaka Igwe, Mahmood Ali-Balogun and my humble self – all of them movie makers, with me working from the outside as a journalist.

The tiny group, very informal in nature, had one major goal: to make the country’s movie industry, later christened Nollywood to our protestation, self-sufficient and be able to pay practitioners like the real stars they are. With all the glamour, we knew Nollywood was hollow inside and we expended time trying to add some depth to the industry by giving it a character and direction that could attract the global community. We had to protect the industry from being perishable!
There was no gainsaying the fact that the industry could be bankable on the long run. After all Kenneth Nnebue had shown the way with Living in Bondage. And you couldn’t attend film and television programmes market across the world, attend various trade shows and wind up at the NAB in Las Vegas without knowing that there was big money to be made from the movie industry. The challenge, however, was that the industry was too informal and the practitioners were not tempered enough to look at the real business in this unfolding entertainment genre.
But Esiri was there trying to introduce some seriousness into the business. Among us we hosted some meetings in turn and those meetings were like little parties, some kind of fun amid fashioning out very serious business that would later become one of the country’s biggest exports. Sometimes pioneers can be like little paper towels that mean very little in the course of a great meal.
People knew Esiri for his role in The Village Headmaster and several other roles in the movies and may not be conversant with this small story as a real patriarch of the movie industry. He was one of the few elderly ones who absorbed needles insults for Nollywood to stand.
Back to the tiny group working for the growth of Nollywood; little strands of progress soon began to create little waves of confusion. Members of the group who had made very difficult financial sacrifices and expended unrewarded time were beginning to look at the end and not the journey to the end. Naturally distrust crept in like the biblical thief of the night and attacked the seams of a relationship like the bunch of broom sticks that together could not be broken.
I didn’t see Esiri for years. And Mahmood Ali-Balogun too. So when Mahmood told me he had lodged together with Esiri at the Hilton in Abuja, it was God provided opportunity to meet him and do some little flicks down memory lane.
There he was in his suite with the driver he had contracted to take him for two days while in the capital territory. The embrace was tight like that of the wrestlers in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, and I was overjoyed because of the strength I could feel through him after all I had read in the papers. He told me the story of his life, how a seeming innocuous health condition took him to the UK and how he had been told by one of the doctors that had he continued with a particular prescription drug could have harmed him irretrievably had he continued with it. The 30 minutes we spent together were nearly a good cover for all the years we had missed each other.
Esiri was a good man. He had enough dose of humour to douse any situation. He could get along with anybody no matter the age and material difference and would contribute his best with utmost humility.
He was a star but never carried the imprimatur on his forehead. He radiated light in the darkness that is the daily grind of the Nigerian life and spread joy to many homes across the country. His death on Wednesday has robbed the country of a great actor per excellence, a seasoned stardust in the real sense of it.
Yet all humans must subject themselves to the finality of death and the supremacy of the Almighty God, the father of our Lord, Jesus Christ. As they put it in the movies: Roll Tape, Action and Cut. So, for Esiri, it is final curtain call, a glorious apotheosis to the realm of the celestial.

Andrew Harvey, Denrele Edun write tearful tributes as Goldie goes home

Since Susan ‘Goldie’ Harvey’s sudden death on February 14, tearful tributes have continued to be shared by her friends and even journalists who doggedly followed her career. We have decided to save the best for last as her widower Andrew Harvey and best friend Denrele Edun share their final tributes to the late Susan ‘Goldie’ Harvey.
Tribute to Susan ‘Goldie’ Harvey by Andrew Harvey
Susan you walked into my life, it was like God sent you as a fresh breath. I still remember your response to my first love message. You said ‘Love killed romeo, sent Diana to an early grave and killed Jack on the Titanic. Forget about love, just have friendship and live long.

Overtime our love grew to a depth I have never known. You were the best years of my life, your smile, your desire to live your dream.
Denrele Edun’s tribute
My super star friend sways away and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says “she’s gone”… Gone where?
Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as gorgeous now as when last I saw her. Her slightly disappearing figure and total loss from my sight is in me, not in her.
And just at that moment, when someone at my side says she’s gone, there are others who are watching her coming over their horizon and other voices take up a glad shout – There she comes! That is what dying is – an horizon and just the limit of our sight.
My lifeline, my lexicon, therapist and support system…we have known lots of pleasure, at times endured ppai, we have lived in the sunshine and walked in the rain. I had acute malaria (was shaking terribly) but performed “skibobo” with you at the Industry Night and Loud&Proud show, I sprained my ankle but still shot your three videos in a row in S/A.
I left my family house and moved in with you and your family right after all the Big Brother Africa madness, I did all the damage control…
I fought every organizer simply cos I wanted you on the bill with me and split my show earnings with you. I dragged you to the American Embassy even if it meant I had to get up at 4am. I endured negative criticism because shallow minds couldn’t comprehend your brand essence – I started wearing block heels (you got me the most fabulous pair of Jeffrey Campbells) and I damned the consequences. I recorded the reality show “Tru Friendship” with you because you went on and on about it and I wanted to please you.
I have been your fierce-alter ego in all your videos, I have fought your fights, endured countless eccentric P.As with you…I can go on and on and this is how you leave me? You chose an eternal sleep over a fabulous life with me? Lest I forget, I ate the entire box of birthday chocolates Bola sent to you!

Phew, I can’t type anymore, I’m playing “Good To Me” (always disturbed you to release that song) and my notepad is a misty mass of my never ending tears. So sad when people who give you the best memories, become a memory!
The Goldie I knew, despite your success and worldwide recognition, still wondered, “Am I good enough?” “Am I pretty enough?” “Will they like me?” It was this burden that made you great…And that made you stumble in the end.
Goldie if you can hear me now, you weren’t good just good enough – You were abso-frigging-lutely GREAT! You sang the whole damn song without a band- you made the picture of a showbiz star look so perfect!
Your parting has left a void, but I will fit it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss and oh yes, these things I too will miss. Even though we are separated and for a time apart, I am not alone cos you’re forever in my heart. I will move mountains to continue your legacy, I will crash ceilings to spread your good works, I will break barriers to sell your “market” but above all, I will cherish the awesome times we spent together…You will forever be my source of infinity!
We wore the same shoe size and had the same body proportions. You made me start strutting lashes and recall I wore that black dress of yours you never got to wear? No masterpiece can ever match your face! To everyone reading this piece, let my dear friend rest in peace! Speak no evil about her, she was too good to be true!
I can hear you say to me…Mbirikoko, do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, Do not stand at my grave and cry…I am not there, I did not die!

Forum launches Eko Green Dream Initiative, set to plant 6,000 trees

A sensitization programme to prevent over use of land for physical development at the expense of  provision for green areas in the suburban parts of Lagos State was launched last week.
Tagged “Eko Green Dream Initiative”, the launch, which heralded  the take off of the project was put together by a non-governmental organization, NGO in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment.

The speakers – Professor Olaniyi Okedele, of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design, University of Lagos,  President of Society of Landscape Architects of Nigeria, SLAN, Dr. Tunji Adejumo, Erelu Abiola Dosunmu provided ideas on how the initiative would not only succeed, but also remain sustained.
The initiator of the Eko Green Dream Initiative, Mrs. Fadera Williams, said her team has identified three local government areas where 6000 trees are to be planted. The identified local governments are Kosofe, where 27 streets were identified; Ikotun-Igando, 16 streets and Isolo where 18 streets were also picked.
“Although, the ultimate goal is how to prevent the suburbs from being over used for physical development to the detriment of environmental protection, especially, tree planting and open space,  we want to quickly seize the opportunity available in the identified three local governments before we carry the campaign to the suburbs that include Epe, Ibeju Lekki, Badagy, among others”, Williams said,  adding that almost 250 volunteers have been recruited for the exercise.
For residential tree planting to attract residents, she said the organization has introduced what she called “Eko Green Card.” The green card involves getting gifts from some manufacturing organisations for a number of trees planted by an individual – landlord, tenants or corporate organisation.
The essence of the card, according to her, is to motivate people to key into the vision of tree planting and protection of the existing ones.
Erelu Dosunmu, while appreciating the initiative, praised Governor Babatunde Fashola for the  ongoing   beautification projects in the state.

Naira Stability Pushes External Reserves to $47bn

Naira notes
By Obinna Chima
Nigeria’s external reserves, which have been on the upswing since the last quarter of 2012, due to the stability enjoyed by the naira as well as reasonably high oil prices, climbed higher to close at $47 billion on Friday, THISDAY investigations have shown.
THISDAY learnt that the current value of the country’s foreign exchange reserves, derived mainly from the proceeds of crude oil sales, represented a year-to-date appreciation of $2.68 billion or six per cent, compared to $44.337 billion as at January 2.
However, the current value of the reserves is still $15 billion short of $62 billion at which the country’s reserves peaked in September 2008 before the global financial meltdown.
The naira has been relatively stable against the dollar in the past 20 months as the apex bank sells dollars at the Wholesale Dutch Auction System (WDAS) to keep the local currency around the band of +/– three per cent of N155/$1.
The naira stood at N155.74 to a dollar at the end of last Wednesday’s auction at the WDAS.
For crude oil prices, the West Texas Intermediate crude for April delivery rose 29 cents to finish at US$93.13 a barrel on Friday while the benchmark Brent crude rose 57 cents to end at US$114.10. Nigeria’s Bonny Light stood at $116.7 per barrel on Friday.
The Africa Economist/Managing Director, Economic and Market Analysis, Citibank, Mr. David Cowan, at the weekend, argued that the high portfolio inflow into the country observed since last year, was also supporting external reserves accretion.
“In the last few years that oil prices have remained high and balance of payment and current account have been in safe position, which allows the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to meet foreign exchange demand.
“But remember that unlike in 2008, the rebuilding of foreign exchange reserves is not due to fundamental savings into the Excess Crude Account (ECA), it is as a result of portfolio inflows that are coming into the country.
“The huge portfolio inflow has helped in stabilising the naira,” he explained.
Cowan, however, declared that if the appreciation of crude oil prices was punctured, the naira might  be hurt.
He added: “But I don’t see that happening soon. Interestingly, what you see is that the pressure on the naira has really abated and that allows the central bank to build forex reserves.
“I think the naira is going to be fine this year and early 2014. By the time we get to 2014, which is a pre-election year, the fiscal consolidation, which has been achieved, is going to come under some pressure at that time.
“I think we might see some changes in the management of the central bank which I think may stall some confidence.”
The CBN governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, recently stressed the need to continue to build fiscal buffers because of what he termed “dark clouds in the horizon.”
He added: “We need to go into a period of strong and serious fiscal restraints and consolidation. We must continue to build up external reserves and protect the economy from external shocks and focus on the strength and resilience of the banking system. We are building buffers for the economy in the event of external shocks.”

Splinter Group Emerges in Nigerian Governors’ Forum

Governor  Godswill  Akpabio

•  Akpabio is chairman of new PDP Govs' Forum

Today is Decision Day for the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) as governors of the 36 states of the federation will meet in Abuja to resolve a leadership crisis that has split the state helmsmen into factions.
Top on the agenda is whether or not to re-elect Rivers State Governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, as the NGF chairman.
But as the 36 governors meet to determine Amaechi’s fate today, President Goodluck Jonathan last night held a closed-door four-hour meeting with the governors of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State House, Abuja, during which Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State emerged as the chairman of a newly formed PDP Governors’ Forum.
Although no clarification was made on what the parallel forum of the governors from one party intends to achieve, political pundits saw the emergence of the splinter group as a counterweight to neutralise the influence of the larger NGF and/or any other similar associations that may be formed by the opposition governors.
One pundit added last night that the real purpose of the PDP Governors’ Forum is to work towards Jonathan’s 2015 re-election bid.
Divisions emerged in the ranks of the NGF last Wednesday when an attempt, championed by three governors described as Jonathan’s loyalists, was made to unseat Amaechi.
The plot, however, failed as other governors rallied support for their Rivers State colleague.
THISDAY learnt Sunday that as the plot to unseat Amaechi thickens, at least 13 northern governors have come together to ensure that he is re-elected today.
Many of their counterparts from the South are also said to be in favour of continuity in order to ensure that the agenda of those with “divisive tendencies” do not prevail.
Some of the governors have also decried the intervention of outside interests in what they described as the “mere election of their chairman.”
One of the governors told THISDAY Sunday that contrary to the belief of associates of the president and some presidency officials, the governors’ forum was not fighting Jonathan.
The re-election bid, which has sharply divided the governors, is also seen as a litmus test for the perceived second term ambition of Jonathan.
It was gathered that the governors supporting Amaechi’s re-election include: Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto, Usman Dakingari of Kebbi, Sule Lamido of Jigawa, Musa Kwankwanso of Kano and Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State. All of them are from the North-west.
However, their colleagues from Katsina State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema and Kaduna State, Alhaji Ramalan Yero, are said to be against Amaechi’s re-election.
Yero’s position is understandable due to the influence of Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who was instrumental to his rise in politics.
From the North-east, the governors of Borno (Kashim Shettima), Yobe (Ibrahim Geidam), Adamawa (Murtala Nyako) and Gombe (Ibrahim Dankwambo) are also in support of Amaechi.
The acting governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar, is said to be neutral, while Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi is opposed to Amaechi’s re-election.
A source told THISDAY that Yuguda is being tipped to jockey for the position with Amaechi.
In North-central, the governors of Niger State (Babangida Aliyu), Kwara State (Abdulfatah Ahmed), Nasarawa State (Tanko Al-Makura) and Kogi State (Idris Wada) are also said to be in support of Amaechi while Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State is said to be sitting on the fence.
However, Benue State Governor, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, is against Amaechi’s return as he is being positioned to become the chairman of the governors’ forum.
THISDAY gathered that all the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governors of Lagos (Babatunde Fashola), Oyo (Abiola Ajimobi), Ogun (Ibikunle Amosun), Ekiti (Kayode Fayemi), Osun (Rauf Aregbesola) and Edo (Adams Oshiomhole) also support Amaechi’s second term bid.
Their counterpart in Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, it was gathered yesterday, was still undecided, but pressure was being mounted on him by interests outside the forum to vote against Amaechi.
It was also learnt that Amaechi’s candidacy was facing challenges in the South-east where only Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, is behind him.
His Anambra State counterpart, Mr. Peter Obi, who is the deputy chairman of the forum, is said not to have given anybody an inking into where he stands on the leadership tussle.
Others from Ebonyi, Abia and Enugu were said to be either undecided or would back a rival candidate.
From the South-south zone, the governors of Bayelsa, Seriake Dickson, and Akpabio are said to be the arrowheads of the anti-Amaechi movement.
THISDAY gathered that the governors opposing Amaechi were yesterday considering Yuguda or Akpabio as replacement for the Rivers State governor.
According to a source, “Of course, Amaechi will vote for himself, but it is not certain what the positions of the governors of Delta and Cross River States are.
“But Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State’s position is certain. He will tow the position of his colleagues in the opposition parties.”
THISDAY also gathered that unless there is a consensual resolution to the leadership crisis rocking the governors’ forum, the outcome of today’s election could hasten the planned movement of some PDP governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Already, there are reports that 12 PDP governors are plotting to defect to the new party.
“They (PDP governors) are merely bidding their time, but the outcome of what happens at the election of the chairman of the governors’ forum would only be an added impetus to their joining APC,” a source said.
“The governors’ forum is a bipartisan body. What some of us don’t like is the interest shown by non-members of the body. Some of us don’t like to be pushed around like children.
“What is so special in the forum of governors that is supposed to be a gauge for peer review among the states?
“Why this partisan interest?  Without the forum, governors can exist and relate with like minds, but the forum serves as a gauge for peer review for the overall interest of the federation,” the source added.
He explained that the tension generated so far by the election of a new chairman has introduced a new dimension to the general permutation for the 2015 election.
He added: “Whichever way one looks at it, the election that is expected to take place tomorrow (today) will be a minus or plus, depending on the side one comes from.
“If Amaechi wins, to some people, this is a negative for outside interests; and if he loses, it is a plus for outside interests. But by and large, the forum will no longer be the same, because of the political colouration.”
The source said the unity of the governors had been tested in the past when outside interests mounted pressure on former Ogun State Governor, Chief Gbenga Daniel, to run for the chairmanship of the forum, but added: “I hope we don’t play a divisive agenda again and we should remain focused as a body.”
One of the governors confided in THISDAY yesterday that the governors were not fighting Jonathan but would not entertain attempts by external forces to meddle in their affairs as a body.
He explained that the governors remain united on basic issues that bind them together, chief amongst which is money.
The governor, who described some of the reported developments in the forum as a clear misreading of the real issues, said the forum recognised the Office of the President and had no reason to take on the occupant unnecessarily.
He dismissed insinuations that many of them were against the retention of Amaechi as the NGF chairman, saying majority of his colleagues who believe in the Amaechi leadership have already rallied round him and his re-election today is considered a fait accompli by majority of them.
He said for as long as they have a chairman who discharges his duties well and with a great sense of commitment like Amaechi, “I don’t see anything that will stop his re-election.
“Like every trade union, we have our aims and objectives with set rules that guide the actions and activities of the governors. But what we will not tolerate is for external influences to shape or direct what goes on in the NGF.
“Nobody is fighting the president and we recognise his place as such. But what we will never allow is external influence from anywhere to control the governors.”
He observed that the governors “have absolutely nothing against the president but were concerned about their money. The issues are always about the Excess Crude Account, the Sovereign Wealth Fund and so on. So, this has nothing to do with the president but the governors.”
He added that although some governors believe that Amaechi sometimes did not show enough tact which is required in the management of certain situations, “what he has going well for him is the sincerity of purpose and his ability to deliver to the letter and that is all that we need. He delivers on every assignment and does just as the governors say.”
“He has never gone out of his way to deliver on his own assignment; he has never used the office to his advantage or used his chairmanship to favour some against the others.
“He is never oblivious of the fact that we are first colleagues and as such, the need to level up on every issue. He has not allowed the office to get into his head.”
But ahead of today’s election in the governors’ forum, the president met last night for four hours with the PDP governors at the State House, Abuja.
Emerging from the meeting with the president, Akpabio announced that he had been elected the chairman of a newly formed PDP Governors’ Forum.
He said this was the outcome of the meeting held between the president, the PDP leadership, governors of the ruling party and other stakeholders.
Akpabio, however, told State House correspondents that the new forum was not meant to sound the death knell on the NGF, stating that it shall continue to subsist.
He added that other opposition political parties are free to set up their own governors’ forum, if they so wished.
Sources privy to the meeting told THISDAY that when Amaechi read the handwritting on the wall, he recused himself from the meeting with the president, stating that he had another meeting to attend.
Sources further explained that Jonathan had summoned the meeting to find out what was responsible for the leadership crisis within the ranks of the governors.
“The president wanted to mediate as a father in this unsettling affair. It was not about him taking sides. It was about putting the PDP house in order,” the source explained.

67 ex-militants withdrawn from Cyprus school

Abuja—Several months after they were withdrawn from their training school in Cyprus, 67 amnesty trainees are to undergo a fresh selection test to determine their eligibility for placement in new institutions abroad.
The affected Niger Delta ex-militants, who signed up for the Amnesty Programme in 2009, were sent to study various skills at Inter College, Larnaca, Cyprus, in 2011 but were withdrawn last December and asked to return home when Nigeria discovered that the school was not accredited to offer the courses it was offering to the trainees.
Vanguard’s finding reveals that the Kingsley Kuku-led Presidential Amnesty Programme was misled by one of its vendors to select the Cyprus school.
The trainees, it was gathered, were withdrawn when it became clear to the Amnesty Programme that the certificates to be issued to the students at the end of their programmes would not be honoured by prospective employers.
The affected students have, however, become agitated since they returned to Nigeria and have asked the Amnesty Office to take steps to find appropriate training institutions for them.
In a text message to Vanguard, weekend, the students complained that they had been left almost stranded without any communication with the Amnesty Office since their abrupt return to the country.
However, the Amnesty Office said, yesterday, that it had not abandoned the affected trainees and was working hard to source another school for them.
Amnesty Head of Media and Communication, Mr. Daniel Alabra, told Vanguard that the affected students would, however, be subjected to a fresh round of selection test on March 25 to determine their suitability for new schools.
Alabra said: “It is true that the students were brought back when we discovered that the school was not accredited, principally to save them from avoidable problems in the future.
“We cannot allow them to waste their precious time and return with worthless certificates and be stranded in Nigeria. That is why we are doing our best to sort their problems out once and for all.”
They lamented that it was wrong for the Amnesty Office to keep them in the dark, having lost some years before they were taken to Cyprus for the aborted training programmes.

60 Army officers quizzed over exam malpratices

ABOUT 60 officers of the Nigerian Army are currently being interrogated for allegedly cheating during the just concluded promotion examination held at the 1st Mechanised Division, Kaduna. If found culpable at the end of investigation by the Military Police unit of the Force, the officers, according to Army authorities, would be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction for trial.
Vanguard gathered that 300 officers, captains and lieutenants, sat for the mandatory promotion examination between February 10 and 15, 2013, out of which only 60 of them who allegedly saw the leaked questions, passed. The leaked answers was reportedly found in the cell phone of one of the officers, a lieutenant, while the examination was going on, despite instruction to keep mobile phones away from the hall. Report said the officer bolted immediately the deed was discovered. But already, he had allegedly passed the answers round to some of his friends.
Also indicted in the examination leakage saga, was a clerk alleged to have made the questions available to the lieutenant. Although it was gathered that the result was currently generating an uproar from the 240 officers who failed the exam, as they claimed only those who saw the leaked questions passed the exams. They also expressed shock that no measure had been taken to punish the alleged cheats.

Tension as Fulani herdsmen kill 2 in Delta

THERE was apprehension , weekend, at Ohoro community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta state following the killing of two villagers by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The circumstances of the killing were still hazy, but angry villagers mobilized , during the week,  and laid siege to the East –West Road and surrounding bushes   in search of the cattle rearers.
Their protest,  disrupted traffic for several hours and left many travelers stranded on the busy highway, while two caterpillars belonging to Setraco, the construction firm handling the dualization of the East-West Road were set ablaze, while soldiers and police officers were deployed to maintain law and order.
For some time now,  there had been skirmishes between Fulani herdsmen and some communities in the state over the destruction of their farm crops.
The governor of the state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, early, this week, warned cattle rearers  to stop damaging farm crops, saying the government would not condone such action anymore.
A source said the anger of the villagers against the cattle rearers was fueled by cold-blooded murder of the two youths, whose remains were laid at the community’s junction.
Recently, a Fulani herdsman attempted to rape a woman in her farm in Patani local government area. The woman’s son, who was working in another part of the farm,  heard his mother’s cry, rushed to the scene  and dealt machete cuts on the supposed rapist.
Days later, Fulani herdsmen gathered  and  killed an undergraduate in one of the communities.
It took the intervention of the chair of Patani  local government , Dr. Chris Ekiyor, who invited security agents before the matter was quelled.
Joint Task Force commander in the area, Lt Col Attahiru Rasheed told Vanguard the latest crisis was between the villagers and Fulani herdsmen, saying soldiers and police had brought the situation under control.

My parents gave out my daughters for marriage before they are 22 yrs – Mrs Idogho

Dr (Mrs) Philipa Idogho is     an alumni of the Federal Polytechnic Auchi and today she is the Rector of the institution after serving in ifferent capacities in the school.
She was re-appointed late last year as the Rector of the institution for a second term by the Federal Government but the reasons are not far fetched. Under her tutelage, she created a second campus of the institution and embarked on massive development of infrastructures. She instituted dress code for staff and students resulting to her being refered as the “Iron ady” of the institution.

 Idogho
Before her coming as Rector, Auchi Polytechnic was known as one of he notorious schools in terms of cultism but today, with the strategies she was able to put in place, engaging the students practically so that after their education, they can be self reliant, she was able to bring sanity to the system. However Saturday Vanguard spoke with Mrs Idogho last week how she has been able to cope with her family and job over the years and it was quite revealing.
You have spent over twenty years of your life in Auchi Polytechnic, how were you able to survive with the men folk and coping with family responsibilities?
Infact, I have never rested in Auchi Polytechnic right from when I entered as a student and staff. I started as a time table officer, then as exam officer, coordinator, HOD now Rector. And there is no committee that I will not be a member. But I was lucky that I have passed through raising up children. Right now, I don’t have any small child at home, all my children are grown up, I am a grand mother now. So it is just my self and my husband. My husband has equally been helpful because he is a medical doctor, he is always in the hospital, he can be called at any time for one emergency or the other. So we have been managing ourselves but most times we stay together in the evening.
Inspite of your beauty, some people who are not close to you see you as a very harsh woman, how do you cope with that perception?
If you are not close to me, you will be looking at me as an iron lady (laughter). You see me as a harsh person when you’re not close to me.
You see, leaders have different qualities. We have leaders who we easily know their character, we have leaders who are conservative and you will always misinterpret their characters. I am a very playful person and again my upbringing shaped my style of life.  I can be an iron lady if you cheat in examinations, collect money from students or caught in illegal activities in the school (laughter). We have zero tolerance for corruption and that is why some people also feel that may be I am wicked but I am not. I grew up in a conservative family, we are not the out-going type, we were brought up to be on our own, not make friends, stay at home, so we are used to that type of life.
My routine is from work, to church because I am into a lot of church activities. So when you don’t meet me at home, you will either see me at the church or in the market. You will only see me in somebody’s house may be the person just had a baby or is having a birthday party. If you don’t have opportunity to interact with me, you will actually think that I am a no go area, but it is not so. My students call me directly or they send me text messages and they give me information on things bothering them and I will always call the people involved and sort out the matter. Like I got a text message recently where a student reported to me that a lecturer has not taught them any thing about doing assignment on the internet and now he wants to give them assignment through the internet. So I told the lecturer it is a good innovation that you are bringing but he should teach the students how to use the internet before he starts giving such an assignment. The lecturer was shocked and asked me how I heard about it but I said don’t bother, that  we can resolve the matter. I got the information because I am very close to the students.
But how did you meet your husband owing to the fact that you came from a very conservative family?
No, it was not as if my background was a holy, holy, thing (laughter). Infact, I am following a male and a male came after me, so I am in between the two of them in the family. So you will even say that I am more of a tom-boy. So I did not have any problem relating with our mates both female and male. My parents are Catholics who are open minded and the truth is that when you are bringing up children, you don’t do it in a manner that they cannot mix with others. They will need their liberties to relate with others, but the most important thing is that we know our limits. Again, my parents don’t allow any of their daughters to exceed the age of 22 before they get married and that was exactly what I did with my only daughter.
Once you have finished secondary school, they will encourage you to get married while you go further in your education. My late mother married at the age of 13, so she does not want any of her children to stay at home because of education. So all the four females that she had got married before the age of 22 and if your husband could not train you, they would train you. That was the encouragement they gave to us.That was why we did not really enter so much into the world before we got married.
Some persons fought against your re-appointment,  what was their problem?
I think it was lack of information because as a sitting Rector, I have the opportunity to be given a second chance if I have performed very well and it does not call for any body’s opinion apart from the opinion of my supervisor. If my supervisor says I have done well,  I need to come back and continue with the good work I am doing. It is the prerogative of my supervisors. And when it was time, my supervisors recommended me to the President for reappointment which he did. So, I felt it was just lack of information on the part of those who were fighting me. God knows the passion I have for this school because I schooled here and I know the problems which I am tackling today.
What was your experience in Auchi Poly?
When I was in this school as a student, we did not have all the structures that we have today.  We did not have the population that we have today but our lecturers then thought us properly. And when I came back after graduation to teach, we discovered too that. In my department for example, students were admitted with the certificate that they have. We did not have this over flow of population.
The school was going on smoothly but development was slow. But we did not know what was happening because we are not in government. Besides, I am somebody that does not like poke-nosing into other people’s affairs. I always work according to the rules and regulations.
So I worked very well as Head of Department for five years.
My Rector then did not even know who to appoint to replace me. I created the shorthand lab, I started the computer lab and so, all the type writers in my department then were changed. I was supposed to spend four years but the Rector then said I should stay on until I left. That was in the Department of Secretarial Studies. Then, I wanted t go for my PHD, I was relieved for one year, later I was appointed again as the Dean School of Evening Studies. I found myself again in governance and in such situation, I don’t know what was happening in the wider polytechnic because I spent all the day in school. But when I became Rector, I discovered that funding was a serious issue. And the vision I have for the polytechnic as an alumni of the school was high and I started thinking what should I do. It is not all about leadership, it is about your relationship with those around you and the people you can use to lift the school. So I contacted people such as the alumni association to come and help the school and when they came, they saw what we were doing and they said, let us help the polytechnic.
They came up with the idea of building a 500-sitter lecture theater for the polytechnic and even a workshop. So they are particular about the progress of the school. Apart from the normal intervention ,we have special intervention and that is why you see building projects coming up here and there in our campuses. So we allocate money more to projects so that when this administration is through, we should be able to look back to say look, we have left enough legacy that some body else can now take off from.
Apart from the infrastructures, we are building human capacity regularly. Last year before we closed for the year we had a workshop on capacity development. So we keep developing our people, we sent some to the UK, some to South Africa, some are in Malaysia. And these are the exposures we are getting. Like the resource person who came last week even noticed that we have a dress code in the polytechnic. Our lecturers who don’t put on suit before, they are now the best dressed staff now.
This is the discipline we have inculcated into them. Today Auchi Polytechnic is now the International Incubation Center in the South South. So we are to be incubating students and at the end of the day what they get here they can now set up their own businesses.
We have a student in the HND Mass Communication but he can bake cake and decorate very well. So we gave him an office here and we bought kitchen equipments and all he needed so that others will come and learn from him. Right now we have a saloon, a fashion out fit, where we train people and they go outside to open their own businesses.
You see this is the only way we can find solution to the unemployment situation in Nigeria because our youths have to be self employed, self exposed so that when they graduate they can sit down and start working on that field so that they can make money for themselves.
So we want to create more avenue where they can learn and be trained. Like I told some body, I have passion for sewing so that is why we have made the environment so conducive by buying state of the art machines, hair making machines such as driers. Any body who is coming to barb and make hair will be very comfortable.
Curbing cultism
We have been keeping our students busy with activities in school and we give them a lot of orientation. For example, I always go to the hostels to visit the students and when I started it, they ran away when they saw me.
I said no they should come that I came to visit them. I brought them closer to the management of the school. Any one who wants to talk to me always come up to talk to me, even personal problems. My students visit me in my house and I do the same. I am here to serve and not to be served. So that is the philosophy that we have.
Funding
You know that in any thing you do there must be proper planning. These projects we are seeing now we planned for them a very long time ago. We resolved that we are going to have a second campus, we renovated all the abandoned buildings and converted them into offices.
We created road networks, built more infrastructures so that the students will have conducive atmosphere for their studies. And most of the resources we are getting for these capital projects are from TESfund and our Internally Generated Revenue of the Polytechnic. We allocate funds appropriately to what we want to use them for, we prioritize projects and we try to get trusted contractors for the jobs and that is why you see that the entire area has changed.
Each time I enter the new campus I find it difficult to believe what we have achieved. Bulldozers are working every day on campus, the secret is proper planning and aggressive monitoring.

Couple die in auto crash

Tragedy has once again struck the Lagos State Government Civil Service, following the unfortunate death of two of its principal officers who lost their lives in a road mishap last weekend.
The accident, which occurred at the Ogere axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun state, claimed the lives of the civil servants who were couple, Mr. Rotimi Olugbuyi and Toyin Olugbuyi.
They were said to be returning to their Ogun state residence after attending a wedding ceremony in Ibadan, Oyo state last Saturday. The couple, until their death, were staff of the Lagos State Civil Service.
While the husband was a Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Ministry of Information attached to the state Scholarship Board, the wife was a Public Relations Officer attached to the state Judicial Service Commission.
According to an eyewitness, the deceased were very unlucky as their car, which was driven by Rotimi, said to be in his late 40s, had one of its tyres burst while on motion and skidded off to the other side of the road where a trailer, already on a high speed and heading towards Ibadan, rammed into them, crushing the car and the occupants.
As a result of the impact, their bodies were shattered. The dismembered bodies were later taken to the Ogere office of the Federal Road Safety Corps, where their relatives were contacted.
It was gathered that the remains of the couple, who had been married for 13 years without a child, were buried side by side amid tears at their Mowe residence
Colleagues from the Lagos state government secretariat, who were present at the burial, described the couple as very nice, loving, caring and dedicated staff while alive
A source, who pleaded anonymity, said Toyin was three months pregnant before the unfortunate
incident. This is a very sad situation, after waiting for thirteen years, just when they were now expecting a child, they died.
However, the Lagos Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by its Chairman, Mr. Deji Elumoye, has paid a condolence visit to Lagos Information Chapel of the union at the Ministry of Information and Strategy over the death of the couple
While expressing regrets over the death of the two members, Elumoye stated that he was satisfied with testimonies of colleagues of the deceased couple which indicated that they lived good lives worthy of emulation.
He urged colleagues of the deceased to rededicate themselves to duty and impact positively on the lives of the people around them, noting that death is an inevitable end for all.
The chairman also prayed to God that such calamities would not befall members of the union again.
Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry, Mrs. Ronke Osho, noted that it was consoling that people outside the ministry shared in the pains arising from the loss of the couple
Most colleagues were short of words but described the couple as very loving, dutiful and easy going fellows. The colleagues are still wondering how could death dealt a big blow on the family, relatives and state civil service by taking them away at their prime.

Crisis tears ex-militant group, NDLF apart

CRISIS hit the defunct Niger-Delta Liberation Force, NDLF, a militant group formed by the ex-militant leader, the late “General” John Togo, weekend, with the group torn into two factions.
Spokesperson of the group, “Captain” Mark Anthony, in an exclusive electronic mail statement to Saturday Vanguard, confirmed that Togo’s successor, “General” Peter,  has been deposed by NDLF on allegations of bad leadership, betrayal and corruption.
However, the toppled leader’s faction, reacting to his purported sack, yesterday,   insisted that he was still in-charge of NDLF leadership. It also denied the allegations of embezzlement and highhandedness.
“Captain” Anthony in statement said, “The NDLF has unanimously endorsed Commander Asi Eniegbolokumor, (former CSO to NDLF) to replace the deposed leader as the new substantial leader of NDLF.”
The statement, co-signed by Commanders Asi Eniegbolokumo, Adobo Ozidi, Ogbowei Allah and Jerome Demebide reads in part, “We,  the undersigned leaders of Niger Delta Liberation Force, NDLF, have sacked NDLF ceremonial leader, Peter Doloebiowei and suspended him indefinitely on offences against the rules and norms of the organization. Therefore, Peter Doloebiowei ceases to be the leader of NDLF…”
They accused him of “single handedly and    fraudulently       compiling    names for the amnesty induction without the   knowledge of     other leaders by adding fake names which took place at the Army Barracks, Effurun Warri, and Delta State at the detriment of NDLF operatives.”
He was also accused of betraying their deceased leader, Togo, shortchanging the members and disregarding key leaders of the group, among other things.
According to the statement, “Commander Asi Eniegbolokumor has been elevated to the rank of a “General” to pilot the affairs of the organization peacefully in line with the oath of peace taken with Federal Government.
“Also, ‘Commander’ Adobo Ozidi, who was the former head of intelligence, FBI, is also elevated to the rank of second- in command to the group. All other positions remain valid”, it added.
The group asserted, “We pledge to keep and maintain the oath of peace with federal government for unity and progress of Nigeria. The amnesty office, general public and the press are advised not to carry out any business with the sacked leader on behalf of NDLF.”
It urged to the Presidential Amnesty Office, police and army to arrest the deposed leader and prosecute him for fraud to serve as a deterrent to others.
According to NDLF, “We appeal to the Amnesty Office to kindly give us the privilege to cross-examine the submitted fake list by the deposed leader to enable us correct the anomaly. We equally appeal to the Amnesty Office to keep to the 100 slots approved for John Togo group, which could go round to give all our boys sense of belonging.”

Fresh off the runway : Rihanna unveils clothing line at London Fashion Week

Pop superstar Rihanna made a splash during the London Fashion Week as she debuted her first ever clothing line in collaboration with River Island, this past Saturday, February 15.
London Fashion week is an apparel trade show held in London every year which attracts big name brands, and also some newcomers. Organized by the British Fashion Council, the London Fashion Week is one of the “Big Four” fashion weeks, along with New York Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week and Paris Fashion week.
As this year’s shows wrapped Tuesday, top luxury brands such as Burberry, Tom Ford and Vivienne Westwood all delivered their collections in typically elegant style. However, all the buzz was about one designer; RIHANNA!
The singer turned designer stole the show, and put her stamp on London Fashion week with a rare catwalk show, and some of the most risqué pieces to hit the runways the entire week.
Her collaboration with UK high street brand, River Island was one of the most anticipated shows of the week, and it met all expectations. It was everything Rihanna; a quick 9 minutes of her racy signature fashion, loud music, and cocktails.
Rihanna stepped into the music scene back in 2005, and became a style icon within a few years. We know Rihanna for her pop hits just as much as we know her for her fashion. Whether she’s going for a walk in the park, or attending the Grammys, the effortless style that Rihanna has is so intriguing.
She is a trendsetter and very well worthy of her own fashion line. Her first ever collection comprised of 120 pieces, and was co-designed with her costume designer Adam Selman.
The River Island collection featured a good share of the styles we have seen on the singer recently, like skin baring crop tops, and maxi dresses with thigh high slits. Most of the outfits were satin, jersey, denim, and sheer fabrics that were predominantly black.
The collaboration between Rihanna and River Island which the British press has reported she is being paid $1.2 million went without a glitch. The fashion show just like the clothes was very Rihanna.
She opted out of the traditional runway for a concert like stage with her models strutting to loud Hip Hop music blaring.
At the end of the showcase the singer emerged from under the stage in a black jersey knit dress from her collection to take a bow. Speaking to reporters at the event, Rihanna said, “My first fashion week in London is my show. That’s amazing.”
As the London Fashion Week comes to an end there is no denying that Rihanna fans are sure to love her debut designs. However, the line has received mixed reviews from fashion critics.
While some have praised the new designer for sticking to her personal style, a review by the Huffington Post called the entire line “a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.”
MTV style’s ChrissyMahlmeister said in her review, “we’re totally on-board with her comfy girly-yet-grunge pieces,” and Elle UK’s Emma Sells said the singer didn’t disappoint.
This line undoubtedly is designed for her young fans that follow her in millions on twitter, and the thousands who pack her concerts. They love Rihanna’s “good girl gone bad” image, that’s her brand and it’s what her young fans buy into.
Many celebrities develop a fashion line and vow to design clothes that they will wear, but never deliver. Looking at Rihanna’s collection one can see her personality all over it.
While fashion critics are busy lashing out at the contents of Rihanna’s collection, she will have the clothes flying off the racks. Her target audience is young, and River Island will definitely see fans pouring in trying to get a piece of the singer.
If you are interested in wearing Rihanna for River Island you should start doing your crunches, triceps dips and squats now or whatever you need to do to fit in these clothes. The collection of clothing and accessories will launch internationally at River Island stores online on March 5.

Two killed as rival revenue collectors clash in Edo

THERE is tension in Edo State following the killing of two revenue collectors attached to Akugbe Ventures licensed to collect revenue on behalf of the state government due to on going war between the Akugbe ventures led by Tony Kabaka and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) led by Osakpanwa Eriyo.
Following the killing of the youths, the state Government Thursday suspended the collection of revenue in motor parks until the contending issues are resolved.
But as it seems, the RTEAN members shun the state government’s directive and went ahead to collect revenue yesterday morning but were apprehended by the Akugbe group who handed them over to the police.
Meanwhile, two suspected armed robbers were shot dead Wednesday, while three were arrested after a gun duel between the robbers and soldiers attached to 195 Battalion, Agenebode, Edo State.
The Army Public Relations Officer, 4 Brigade, Benin City, Capt. Rose Managbe, who conducted journalists around, during the parade of the three suspected robbers, including the bodies of the dead accomplices, said soldiers from 195 Battalion, a formation under the brigade received a distress call, while on their way from Agenebode, in Etsako East Local Government Council.
However, Kabaka who spoke to newsmen shortly after he visited the families of two of his members who were killed, narrated that RTEAN members refused to allow his member collect revenue despite the fact that it has the license from the state government to do so.
“Now they have killed two of our members and I want to appeal to government to investigate the matter and ensure that the killers are apprehended.
“I am a changed man and I don’t want to kill. I am only appealing that they should allow us do our job. What the RTEAN is doing is being greedy. But I want to say that no body has monopoly of violence but we will not engage them because it is my strong believe that the Comrade Governor will find solution to the problem” he stated.

Mimiko: Beyond the hollow ritual of oath taking

A new dawn looms in Ondo State, as Dr Olusegun Abayomi Mimiko takes the oath for a second term in office
As it is customary of this type of epoch making event, the people of the state and indeed, the general public, both local and global audience will be treated to the theatrics of a colourful event.
With an estimated guests attendance of about thirteen thousand people (13,000) the swearing in ceremony of Governor Mimiko slated for Sunday 24th February 2013 at the Democracy Park in Oja Oba area Akure promises to be another historic event in the annals of the state.
Governor Olusegun Mimiko and his Deputy, Alhaji Alli Olanusi will be inaugurated  amidst pomp and pageantry. Nonetheless, activities for this great event will be rounded off on Sunday 10th, March with a thanksgiving service at the Redeemed Church of God, Provincial Headquarters along Ilesha Road in Akure.
Notwithstanding the elaborate plans put in place by the cerebral team of the Inauguration Planning Committee headed by the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr Akin Adaramola,  the import of an occasion like the swearing-in of a major political office holder like the governor of a state should not be under-estimated.  Not even in the least, the inauguration of a political iconoclast like Governor Olusegun Abayomi Mimiko, who advertently or inadvertently destiny has accorded the honoric duty of using such moments to galvanize hope in his people irrespective of  their situations and circumstance.
Precisely four years ago, Mimiko made historical statements on the occasion of his inauguration before the mammoth crowd that gathered to rejoice with him.  It was shortly after the Appeal Court Tribunal restored his hitherto stolen mandate after rigorous months of exhilarating legal battles.  Specifically, it was February 23rd, 2009, at the Akure Stadium that Mimiko, the avant-garde politician popularly called and known as Iroko made that avuncular historical declaration as a covenant with the people.
Standing humbly before the joyous crowd, the, elated  Mimiko, reflected on the rising frustrations of his people under previous administrations seized the moment as he declared:  “I will strive at all times to make decisions that will benefit the greatest number of our people.  I will work for you.  “As the Iroko made this pronouncement, he struck a cord in the declining spirit of his people, who were obviously and earnestly yearning for a messiah of some sort.  Giving their concomitant predicament political and social situation at the time, such an assuring prophetic message of hope was all the people needed to give the new occupant at Alagbaka Government House all the support to steer the ship of state.  For other politicians, such statements are often regarded as normal political gibberish that have little or no nexus between the speaker and the target audience.  However, in the case of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, the inaugural pronouncement on 23rd February 2009 has become the defining character of the first four years term tenure of Iroko in the Sunshine State.  The statement, “I will work for you” has reverberated throughout the governor’s days in office in the last four years of his administration in Ondo State.
A cursory  review of developmental programmes and projects under Governor Mimiko in his first term in office will certainly prove cynics wrong.  The administration’s Mother & Child Hospital is an open book.  Located in the state capital, Akure and Ondo, the hospital with facilities of world class standard and other well-equipped health institutions across the state, which has become a catalyst for the success of Abiye, the popular Safe Motherhood Programme of the state government has become an international bench mark .
The success of the Abiye Programme is not only measured by the sheer number of lives that have been saved, or brought to life free of charge but also by its recognition and endorsement by the international bodies such as World Health Organization (WHO) World Bank, and UNICEF as a benchmark for developing world in the war against infant and Maternal Mortality.
The international recognition of Ondo State today is not only in the area of commendable attention of Mimiko to the health of his people, the state has also been acclaimed for development in Human Habitat Renewal.  This was manifested recently with the honoring of Mr. Governor in far away Italy for his exceptional performance in Urban Renewal.  Without any equivocation, this honour can be seen in the new look of major towns, especially Akure, the State Capital.  The beautifications, the road dualization, organized market and transport systems along with other noble initiatives of the administration have earned the state a pride of place amongst its peers.  As once stated, by John Henry Newman, a renowned English author, “growth is the only evidence of life.”
In the last four years, Governor Olusegun Mimiko has demonstrated the wisdom in Henry Newman dictum in almost all spheres.
In the administration’s 12-point  Programme Christened – A Caring Heart, Agriculture and Food Security have received requisite attention as food supply in the state in the period under review has received tremendous boost through a number of steps taken to assist farmers.  These include the mobile farm in-puts supply system, the farm produce buy back policy and the establishment of Agro-Cities in the three Senatorial Districts of the state to encourage youths on mechanized farming.
The Iroko has in the past four years  connected significantly with the grass roots through the popular Quick-Win Projects which are found in more than four hundred communities with different projects such as Basic Health Centre, Town Hall, School Infrastructure, Road, electrification and cottage industries amongst others.  The people are happy for being part of governance as they make their choice in whatever they want from government.
Specifically, the rural populace makes the project choice, execute and take charge to guarantee sustainability. Each of these communities can boast of at least three projects that are life-changing and community centred.
The state government has also ahead its peers in the area of empowering its people.  This the government has creditably done for groups like Market Women, artisans, widows and farmers through the different credit windows.
The past four years has also witnessed tremendous growth in education with the Mega Schools introduction.  It has also embarked upon aggressive infrastructural provisions in all its tertiary institutions.  The state government has equally placed its name on the global tourist map with its transformation projects on commerce, trade, Culture and Tourism.  The Sunshine State, hither
to a far away zone to tourists in Europe and America has today become a haven for tourists on yearly mountain climbing adventure.
In view of these and many more giant strides,  Mimiko’s second coming to be preceded with an inaugural ceremony should excite all progressive- minded people.  While elaborate plans have been made to make the occasion colorful and unique, Governor Olusegun Mimiko again patiently awaits the historic moment to re-launch himself as the selfless patriot who is an harbinger of good tidings to his people.
On the 24th February, all lovers of history, all lovers of development will watch out for yet another historic and prophetic pronouncement from no other person than the Iroko himself.  It is an auspicious occasion for a great expectation that certainly goes beyond the hollow ritual of oath taking! Iroko, again, history beckons!!
